Where is Coventry in England?

Coventry is a city in the West Midlands, located 30 minutes east of Birmingham along the River Sherbourne. The city is historically located in the county of Warwickshire and the city of Warwick is only 20 minutes away.

What is Coventry famous for?

Coventry has a long history of being a industrial hub in the UK. It was a vital city in England during the Middle Ages because of its textiles production. It later because a hugely important city during the industrial era of the 19th and 20th centuries, producing much of the countries bicycle and motor industry.

The city centre was almost completely destroyed by The Blitz during the war and much of the city was not fully rebuilt until the 50s and 60s leading to an economic slump in the area.

How to spend a day out in Coventry, UK

Visit the Reel Store

A long room with unique purple and multi-coloured graphics projected all over the floor and walls
The Reel Store

Coventry was voted the UK City of Culture in 2021 and thanks to that, the city has had a huge financial injection with plenty of cool arts and cultural attractions and additions to the city.

The Reel Store is a digital art gallery where you can walk into a large room covered in screens and digital projections and feel completely immersed in the digital art and moving projections. The art piece lasts around 20 minutes and you’re encouraged to take a seat, sit on the floor, lie down or just wander around and feel the art moving around you.

The digital display we saw was called Machine Memoirs: Space by Refik Anadol in collaboration with NASA and made up of 2 million pictures of space.

The current exhibition is the Life and Work of Mexican Painter, Frida Kahlo.

Check their website for current exhibitions and prices.

Visit the Coventry Cathedral ruins and explore the historic area

A stone street surrounding the large old pinkish stone ruins of the Coventry Cathedral.
Coventry Cathedral

Coventry is known as being one of the most bombed areas outside of London during the war. As such, much of the city was destroyed and has been replaced by more modern architecture which is why the city doesn’t always have the best reputation when it comes to architectural beauty!

But even in ruins, the Cathedral is spectacular to see. You can wander through the ruins for free, read the information boards and learn about the history of the religious site.

Now the space is used for festivals, open air events and exhibitions which is a really beautiful way to repurpose the space.

Wander around the cathedral too and take in the charming Bayley Lane with its cobbled street and timber framed houses.

Stop by the Fords Hospital Alms House

AN interior outdoor courtyard with dark timber framed walls and stone floor
Fords Hospital Alms House

This unique 16th century, timber framed building was originally built to house a merchant, five men and their wives. The building was bombed in the war and rebuilt with original timbers. But the unique courtyard in the centre is really fascinating and is what makes this a popular building for historians to study domestic architecture from the period.

The building isn’t always open to the public but you can still see the courtyard through the closed gate at the front.

Burn off some energy at Axe Throwing

What’s more fun than doing something unusual in a new city?

If you’re looking for unusual things to do in Coventry, check out the Axe Throwing at Boom Battle Bar in the city centre.

Sessions last for 30-45 minutes depending on the day, which doesn’t sound like long but you’ll be exhausted afterwards!

You can book out a lane for you and your group and give your best throws!

You also have the option to enjoy a drink and bites to eat afterwards at the bar.

Axe throwing is one of those activities which you just never expect to enjoy as much as you do! It’s a real adrenaline rush and a great fun experience with friends or on dates! Definitely one to add to your list for a day out in Coventry!

Enjoy a drink at Dhillons Brewery Spire Bar

A tall stone spire with an arched entrance to a brewery. Infront of the Spire has outdoor seating.

What’s cooler than a craft beer taproom? A taproom in an old church!

Dhillons Brewery Spire Bar is a super unique place to go for drinks in Coventry with a dramatic interior inside a church with a huge Spire.

Being situated in a square nearby a children’s play area, they also have loads of outdoor seating in wooden huts which are perfect for sitting out in the summer or the winter.

If you’re more of a cocktails fan, we highly recommend the Botantist in Coventry, the building is absolutely stunning and the interior decor is so unique, there’s even a stream flowing through the venue, a waterfall and bridges to cross the stream to reach the bar.

Enjoy Korean BBQ

We discovered that there’s a huge diversity of places to eat in Coventry!

Being big fans of Korean food, we were delighted to see a Korean BBQ restaurant available.

If you’ve not experienced Korean BBQ before, you select a meat platter and you have a hot plate at your table where you cook the meat yourself.

The meat is great quality, in a Korean marinade and you get a bunch of sides too such as kimchi, Korean pancakes, eggs and rice.

Korean BBQ isn’t just a place to eat, it’s a whole dining experience and a super fun evening out with friends or your partner.

Summary: Best things to do in Coventry in 1 day

Like the axe throwing, Reel Store and Korean BBQ, there are so many unique things to do in Coventry and places to see in Coventry that make it well worth a 1 day trip from Birmingham to Coventry.
